Demons.exe Info Post | Species: Incubi and Succubi
Incubi and Succubi (colloquially known as Sexubi in combined plural) are a species in the Demons.exe world, named after actual demons of legend. They do bear superficial resemblances to their namesakes, but there are many differences, which will be covered along with the general information here.
Sex
Sexubi, as you might expect, thrive on intimacy with another. This doesn't always have to mean sex though, nor do they need it to survive. As young children they're taught to have an openness to love and sexuality, and this leads to an individual falling almost anywhere on the sexuality spectrum. An aromantic incubus is no more unheard of than a pansexual succubus, and everything in between. It's less about sex and more about the deep, intimate bonds they form with one or more partners. This is what gives them vitality, and sustains them through their lives.
Physical Characteristics and Senses
Though easily hybridized with humans and other demons (more on that below), most sexubi share several characteristics. They'll often have horns of one kind or another, with the males more likely to have them (and in larger sizes) than the females. Tails are common and usually reptilian in nature, though of course some mammal hybrids can override this. While many have wings, these generally fall under "summonable appendages" and are not always present; when visible, they usually take the shape of webbed wings or black feathered wings. Claws are common if not standard, as well as fangs. They have a high calorie burn (whether or not they partake in regular sex) and tend to be fairly warm to the touch as a result, despite most myths claiming them to be frigid.
Their eyes are often catlike, up to and including vertical irises and a tapetum lucidum, handy for enhanced night vision. Adding to nighttime senses are their increased hearing capability, as well as sensitive touch receptors (though this often leads most incubi and succubi to dress as skimpily as decently possible). Greatest sense to a sexubus is their sense of smell, so delicate that it can pick up the slightest pheromones on the breeze. This can cause some to become picky eaters, though not at a higher rate than humans.
Lifestyle
As mentioned above, young sexubi are taught to respect all forms of love. This goes right into the general upbringing, which verges on the hedonistic. Most incubi and succubi form communes and clans, creating a hippie-like existence where they can practice what they preach in harmony. From the youngest of ages they're instilled with a great respect for all living things and the way others choose to live their lives, to give them distance if needed, and to share the joy of gratification and following your heart's desire. Naturally, many freedom movements are led by incubi and succubi. While they do take responsibility when needed and aren't one to shirk their duties, many sexubi live in the here-and-now, and can be quite guilty of going more on impulse and instinct than on rational thought. In addition to this, most individuals you'll meet will have names related to sex, love, and beauty, as a way of expressing their way of life.
Of course this is not a hard and fast law, but is a general rule for how many live.
Hybrids
As perhaps to be expected, there are many hybrids to be found, perhaps even more than "pedigree" sexubi. Perhaps related to their inherent magic, incubi and succubi always blend well with humans or demons of almost any make and model.
Hybrids are, at times, often difficult to tell from other sexubi as their characteristics tend to be dominant, and even full-bloods can be in shapes other than humanoid. The main sign you might have a hybrid on your hands is a specialization in a magic variety other than the shadow wielding practiced by most incubi or succubi, or a near lack of magic entirely; this is more likely the further you get from the sexubus parent. Other than that it can be almost impossible to tell, particularly as numbers shift. Overall it doesn't matter much, with hybrids being considered on the same level as pure-bloods by their own kind.
Lifespan
There must be something said for living a life of gratification, because sexubi are among the longest lived demons, often having a lifespan anywhere from two to four times greater than the average human.
Typically, the conversion rate goes as 3-1, though this is give or take depending on the individual's DNA, and can shift as they age. For example, one incubus character in the universe is about 70 as of present day, but physically about 25. Truly ancient sexubi can be in the higher hundreds in age, making them almost elven in consideration.
Magic
As demons, incubi and succubi have full use of magic. Theirs tends to be shadow or dark-aligned, making some uneducated sorts automatically side them with evil, though in practice this isn't true. As nocturnal demons of a sort, they simply evolved with more night-allied magic at their disposal.
Most sexubi, regardless of parentage, will share a few different abilities. As mentioned above they can have summonable wings, a set (or two) which can manifest at will from the shadows and give them the ability to hover or fly, depending on size. This generally doesn't destroy clothing as the wings are made of shadow (despite appearing solid), but of course this isn't a problem anyway for the shirtless sort. Like the incubi and succubi of legend they'll typically also have a teleport ability, a way to mist themselves in and out of locations through the dark ether. Advanced sexubi can also manipulate shadow as if it were physical matter, though this can take many years to master properly.
Another ability spoken of in mythology is their take on "honeyed words", where many display a hypnosis-like power. This skill can be used by amoral sexubi to twist others' minds under their control, but most that possess it use it for more benign pursuits, such as roleplaying with a partner.
Often they can also transform themselves, either in whole or in part, making them look entirely like another person. This usually has a time limit based on skill or energy level. Some also have the capacity to switch their gender entirely, an incubus becoming a succubus or vice versa; again this is hardly permanent, and is up to discretion and skill. While sexubi can have a greater strength than your average human, this fact won't change no matter what they shift in to, their own basic abilities carrying over to the new form. It's a cosmetic change and little else.
Overall
You really can't go wrong if you meet one of these demons. Hardly the monsters of mythology, that sneak into your room and ravish you in your sleep, real incubi and succubi tend to be loving, honest demons, if misunderstood. They can be some of the fastest friends you'll get, and certainly among the longest lasting. There can be bad eggs found, as with any population of a size-- their shadow powers and hedonistic lifestyles lend themselves well to temptation and evil --but it's hardly fair to judge the entire race by the actions of a few, as with any demon.
If nothing else, at least you're in for an experience.
