Demons Info Post | Setting
This is, at heart, a world of magic. According to the oldest myths it was formed from the soul of a massive phoenix, who reportedly still inhabits the center of the world and continues to infuse it with said magic. Whatever the start of everything, what's true is that there is magic in everything. In flowers, in the sky, in people...
And in demons.
These aren't the "escapees from Hell" sort, though. In antiquity, an excess of magic right alongside other evolution would create countless other sentient beings besides people. Most of them were animal-based, others not, but early humans were afraid. Whether it was because some were as violent as their pure animal counterparts or because vicious chimeric monsters called "Chaotics" also existed, blurring the lines between what was safe and what was not, the word "demon" came about to describe all those of the sort. Anything that was deemed a threat was pushed to the edges of the world, even perfectly normal people that had spellcasting abilities themselves, and there they stayed as world history birthed civilization and people began to spread further and further over the planet. Still, the existence of those deemed special was still whispered about, and many stories were crafted over time, telling of them.
Perhaps it was the lingering fascination but when, pushed too far that they could only push back, demons spilled over and began integrating into the fledgling habitations, they did not find as much opposition as they might've back when early humans still roamed. This isn't to say they didn't experience violence, to this day there are still "anti-demon" sorts that will persecute them ruthlessly. But, as years spread into centuries, towns turned into cities and technology began to flourish, demons found their place among humans.
This is where we are in the modern day. Though their overall population is outnumbered, demons aren't uncommon by any means, as well as human mages and anything in between. However, there's still the threat of Chaotics and other such monsters, magic is a difficult beast in and of itself to conquer, and demons still get attacked from time to time just because they exist. It's not the easiest world to live in, but then, what is?
